A disastrous opening 10 minutes for The Harps proved costly as they lost out to The Rock last Friday in the league. Starting the game with only 14 players and with team manager Gabby Irwin showing great commitment by lining out at full back. The Harps conceded 2-03 in the early stages to leave themselves a mountain to climb. The arrival of Pat Walshe brought The Harps players count to 15, and with pride at stake our footballers upped the effort and managed to send over a string of points through the accurate Jim Campion. A hotly disputed penalty was awarded to The Rock which was converted to leave The Harps trailing by 9 points at half time.
To their credit The Harps fought back well in the second half against a strong wind. Strong running by Niall Brophy and Pat Walsh resulted in further scores. When Brophy was pulled down in the square The Harps were awarded a penalty, which Jim Campion sent to the top corner of the net. With 10 minutes to go The Harps had the margin narrowed to just three points but with nearly every call by the ref going against us it made a difficult task all the harder. A combination of going for goals when a point was there for the taking and some soft free’s awarded to The Rock meant the game finished on a scoreline of The Rock 3-09 to The Harps 1-09.
This loss all but ends The Harps chances of reaching the league final, and a big effort is now required to get the panel ready for the championship.
