The committee of the Harps Senior Club were informed this afternoon (Monday 3rd August 2020) that a member of a Park-Rathineska/Timahoe (PRT) team was tested for covid-19 on Sunday 2nd August 2020 and received a positive result on Monday 3rd August 2020. This player had played for PRT v Harps Junior B team on Saturday 1st August 2020 at 7pm in the Harps grounds, Durrow. The committee immediately contacted the Laois County Board, the GAA website and the HSE.

The GAA guidelines say that those playing with/against a player who test positive for Covid 19 are deemed casual contacts and NOT close contacts: “To date it appears to us in the risk assessments that have taken place anyone who is outdoors hasn’t to date been considered a close contact… Where activities are outdoors it appears players are being considered casual rather than close contacts in those circumstances by public health, not by us”. The guidelines recommend that Public Health advice should be followed. The committee contacted the HSE who confirmed that players are deemed casual contacts and that they can continue to act as normal unless they feel that they have symptoms of covid 19 in which case they should self-isolate and seek a test.

This matter should refocus all persons involved in sports at the moment of the importance of following public health guidelines regarding the reconfirmation of the health questionnaire before every session, the use of hand sanitiser and recording attendance at training/matches.

Stay safe,
The Harps Committee.

HARPS GAA – AGM 2019 – Adjourned until January 13th: A large crowd was in attendance last Sunday, January 6th at the Clubhouse for the Annual General Meeting. The meeting commenced with review of last year’s AGM followed by an indepth report from the club’s secretary, Dave Finnegan. The chairman Seamus Campion then invited the treasurer Imelda Galvin to give a detailed breakdown of the Club’s financial report. This was followed by a report from the juvenile section Secretary Enda Murphy. All reports were adopted. Attention then turned to the election of officers. Jimmy Fogarty was re-elected Club president. However, the appointment of Chairman failed to go through with no nominations received following Seamus Campion’s decision to call time on his five year term. The AGM was subsequently adjourned and another meeting will take place at 5pm this Sunday, January 13th in the Clubhouse. All are most welcome to attend.

Senior Hurling Team: The Senior Hurlers will play in the Senior A Final against Portlaoise at 2pm next Sunday, October 7th in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise. Please come along and support the lads!

Minors: Congratulations to The Harps Minors / U17s who had a great win over Abbeyleix last Saturday week in the semi-final of the hurling championship and are now getting ready for next Sunday’s final – in Portlaoise (likely to be in O’Moore Park before the 2pm Senior game) at 12.15pm. The game last Saturday was very tight throughout with The Harps eventually getting through by a two point margin. Clough-Ballacolla/Mountrath are the opposition next Sunday – the same pairing as contested last year’s U16 final which the local side lost by a three point margin. Hopefully that result can be reversed next Sunday afternoon!
